Research

Kelechi graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Optometry from the University of Benin in 1992, and with a Ph.D. in Optometry and Vision Sciences from the University of Cardiff in 1997.

Kelechi's postgraduate research involved investigating the factors that underlie the endothelial pump mechanism by which the human cornea maintains its relatively dehydrated state. Kelechi's research focus shifted toward clinical research in the decade and a half he spent as a professor of optometry and vision science in the Middle East, during which time he was recognized for his contributions to raising the level of education and standards of practice of the profession in Saudi Arabia in particular.

Kelechi's current research endeavours are focused on: The assessment of human corneal biomechanical properties and their impact on the measured intraocular pressure (IOP); refractive surgery to manage corneal ectasias; the expanding role of optometrists as primary eyecare providers; and the accurate assessment of IOP (the key to the diagnosis and management of glaucoma).
