Research
Shirley works part time as a Senior Lecturer for the Centre for Postgraduate Nursing Studies. She has a clinical role within primary practice at Allenton Medical Centre in Ashburton and as a casual nurse at Ashburton Hospital. Shirley also volunteers as a Paramedic with St John Ambulance Services.Shirley has a broad clinical background including emergency, surgical, acute medical, primary health and palliative care.Shirley's interests are in primary health and advanced nursing practice. Her research interests include Long-Term Oxygen Therapy in COPD and she commenced a PhD in 2014. Her research interests are related to her clinical practice and focus on slef-management with long-term conditions. In particular her interest is on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and how people manage thier oxygen therapy. Her master's research examined how patients adhered to long-term oxygen therapy. Shirley has been involved in developing the pilot study for the RCT 'Life balance: A feasibility study' and developed the symptom management component of this project. Shirely is interested in exploring innovative interventions to improve symptom management in COPD
