We were so privileged to host the fantastic Dr Donna Cormack last Monday who presented about data (in)justice and Māori data sovereignty in a datafied world.

Throughout her talk we explored the broader context within which current data practices involving Māori data occur, some key issues and challenges in this space, and alternative visions of data practices founded in Māori ways of knowing, being and doing.

A great quote we took from Donna’s talk is;

“Māori data sovereignty should be the inherent rights and interests that Māori have in relation to the collection, ownership, and application of Māori data.

Māori Data Governance in this context refers to the principles, structures, accountability mechanisms, legal instruments and policies through which Māori can exercise control over the creation, collection, access, analysis, interpretation, management, security, dissemination, use and reuse of Māori Data.

the principles are: Rangatiratanga (authority); whakapapa (relationships); whanaungatanga (obligations); kotahitanga (collective benefit); manaakitanga (reciprocity); and kaitiakitanga (guardianship)”
