Sir Eion Edgar 186Sir Eion Edgar is chair of the Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre and his generous donation was instrumental in establishing the Centre 17 years ago.

In addition to chairing the EDOR advisory board, Sir Eion is integrally involved in the Centre's public events, and regularly speaks at EDOR symposia. His role as Patron of Diabetes New Zealand and his connections with many charitable groups in New Zealand all contribute to his on-going enthusiasm to make a difference to the lives of New Zealanders.

Sir Eion has a long association with the University of Otago.  This includes 23 years on the University Council and serving as Chancellor from 1999-2003. Sir Eion was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University for his outstanding service. His philanthropy work has also earned him many awards and accolades, including a knighthood, being named NBR New Zealander of the Year 2004, the Senior NZer of the Year in 2010, and being inducted into the Business Hall of Fame.
