The teaching experience of medical interns in a period of transition
PhD Start Date
April 2014 (Part time candidate)
This mixed methods research project explores the teaching experiences of junior doctors following graduation from medical school in New Zealand. In phase one of this research, 17 interns working in a range of District Health Board settings across New Zealand were interviewed at the beginning and end of their first year of practice. The interviews explored participants’ experiences of transitioning to practice from being medical student to doctor and a new member of the health care team and the role they play in influencing the learning experience of others. Further, the extent to which participants‘ clinical teaching experiences in undergraduate training shaped their conceptions of teaching, and what is perceived as important in their own practice when teaching others. The key themes derived from phase one have informed the questions posed to explore the whole 2015/16 PGY1 cohort views (approx. n=460 ) via electronic survey.
