Fulbright New Zealand Scholar Award winners Pathology Associate Professor Sarah Young and Physics Professor Craig Rodger.
Two of the six academics to receive Fulbright New Zealand Scholar Awards this year are Otago academics keen to make use of the travelling opportunity the award brings.
The awards enable Physics Professor Craig Rodger and Pathology Associate Professor Sarah Young to travel to America pursuing their respective research interests.
Professor Rodger plans to research the loss of electrons from the Van Allen radiation belt into the atmosphere, at the University of Iowa in Iowa City in mid-2015.
“It is such an exciting thing for me to go to the town of space physics in Iowa. I’ve never been there,” he says. “These are very prestigious awards.”
Associate Professor Young is going to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and to Texas Children's Hospital Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, to work on development of a vaccine and immune therapies for colorectal cancer.
“The award is a great honour for me. It'll also enable me to take my family to the USA with me, something they're really looking forward to,” Associate Professor Young says.
