Head of the School of Performing Arts Professor Ritchie leads staff and students in an original waiata during the special blessing on Monday morning.

The University’s new Music, Theatre and Performing Arts Centre was officially opened with a whakawaatea (blessing) and a waiata composed for the occasion.

The waiata was a collaboration, with Megan Potiki contributing the words and the music composed by Anthony Ritchie and edited by Poia Rewi.

The $26 million project brings together programmes of Music, Theatre, Dance and Performing Arts on one site and includes an industry-leading two-storey recording studio.

Head of the School of Performing Arts Professor Ritchie said those attending the blessing were very excited about the new facility.

“The staff who hadn’t seen it before were blown away.”
