We provide travel reimbursements for senior students (200-level and up) in the Division of Humanities to return to their secondary schools to encourage students there to consider studying humanities at the University of Otago.
We believe the best way to promote Otago is for prospective students to hear about the experiences of current students.
Humanities degrees are degrees in:
Arts, Arts and Science, Law, Music, Performing Arts, Social Work, Teaching and Theology.
Applications are now open. The deadline is Friday 12 April 2019.
What are we looking for in a School Ambassador?
We are looking for students in their second or third year at Otago, although more senior students can apply. The intention is for the student to be similar in age and outlook to the school pupils and perhaps even be known to them.
Ideally we would like to send students who have had both residential college and flatting experience, who are confident speakers, who involve themselves in extra-curricular activities and, most importantly, are passionate about the subject(s) they are studying and majoring in.
Students arrange the visits themselves so it is also helpful if they have maintained some contact with the school.
When should a School Ambassador visit take place?
Ideally the School Ambassador visits will happen during the break between semesters when university exams are over but secondary schools are still in session.
This window of opportunity is from 20 June until 5 July (the last day of term for secondary schools).
Students will be required to attend an informal briefing session with Greg Heller, Schools’ Liaison Officer.
How much is the travel reimbursement?
Students will receive travel reimbursements of up to a maximum of $300.
This is a reimbursement based on the actual cost of travel and GST receipts for travel costs will be required.
If a student does not need to travel to visit their old secondary school, they will be reimbursed for their time with a prezzy card valued at $50.
How to apply for the School Ambassador programme
Students will need to:
- complete an application form and attach a brief CV
- attach a copy of their academic record
- get a signature of recommendation from their lecturer on the application form
Deadline for applications
The deadline for completed application forms is Friday 12 April 2019.
Applicants will be advised if their application has been successful by 3 May 2019.
