Working in conjunction with a staff adviser, students investigate a research topic related to either an area with which familiarity has been gained through undergraduate study or derived from an area pursued in one of the taught papers at 400-level.

Teaching Arrangements

A series of 1-hour seminars is held Fridays at noon in semester one, offering an introduction to topic formation, to research resources, methods and techniques and to both written and oral presentation skills. An afternoon of seminar presentations is held during this course of classes, and a further seminar will be given in mid-July.

A draft of the essay must be submitted by 31 August, and the final version by 2 October.

Where possible, students should identify a research topic by early December of the year preceding the year of study, so that they can commit themselves to a reading programme over the summer break prior to the fourth year of study.

Textbooks are not required for this paper.
