An advanced study of British and American Romantic literature, theory and philosophy.
This paper examines a selection of key works in British and American literature associated
with Romanticism: William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Lyrical Ballads;
Lord Byron's Don Juan; Edgar Allan Poe's short stories; and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick;
or, The Whale.
We will begin by addressing that perplexing question: just what
is Romanticism? Over the course of the year we will consider how these various writers
created, extended or avoided a Romantic aesthetic in their own works. Recent scholarly
articles will help direct our conversations. At the core of the class, however, will
be the works themselves. Students with some background in 19th-century literature
are especially encouraged to take this paper, but anyone with interest and enthusiasm
for the subject is most welcome.
