Research project on a music topic in the community.
This paper will equip students with research skills that will enhance their capacity for independent study in and across different areas of cultural knowledge. Through seminar discussion and critical evaluation of key methods and writings, students explore through first-hand experience the various ways that scholars represent music in the modern-day cultural context and then apply this knowledge to a research project of their own design. Focus is given to music making of any style in Dunedin.

At the end of this paper, you will be able to demonstrate that you can:
a research project design that
- Has a clearly worded research question (or questions) that can be answered within the limitations (time, expense, word-limit, etc.) of the written report
- Has clearly outlined and viable research aims
- Utilises appropriate research methodology and data collection tools (e.g. questionnaires, interview questions) to answer the research question/s
- Meets the requirements of the University of Otago Human Ethics Committee
- Create a literature review that identifies and evaluates what scholarly writing exists on your chosen research topic and/or closely related topics
- Capture ethnographic research data. This
may include demonstrating the following skills:
- Administering surveys or questionnaires
- Recording observations in fieldnotes
- Recording music performances (aurally and/or visually)
- Analyse research data.
This may include demonstrating skills such as
- Transcribing interviews and coding data thematically
- Identifying key themes
- Write a research
report that demonstrates the development of the following competency:
- Structuring findings to create a cohesive and coherent narrative that answers the research question(s) and meets the project's stated aim
- Create a research project design that
