ARTV305 Gender Issues in Art

An introduction to issues in feminist art historiography, examining representations of and by women, as well as the political contexts of art production and reception.

This is an introduction to the issues and debates in feminist art historiography placed within a chronological framework. The paper examines representations of and by women, as well as considering the political contexts of art production and reception. Issues around sexuality, censorship and 'the gaze' will also be discussed. Students will also examine examples of art produced by and for women, focusing in particular on 20th- and 21st-century art.
