What is art history? What are its premises? Where did it come from? This paper examines the historical foundations of the discipline and the diverse range of contemporary methodological approaches.
Histories of Art investigates the approaches scholars and critics have developed from art history's emergence as a distinct intellectual discipline to the present. This paper is not a comprehensive survey, but rather an intensive and critical examination of key approaches within the field of art history, which will provide students with a solid understanding of their discipline and a greater self-awareness concerning the application of its methods. This paper prepares advanced art history students for their final year of undergraduate study, providing both a continuation and solidification of earlier coursework. Through discussion of a series of historical and contemporary texts, students explore a variety of historical and theoretical issues in art history, criticism, and visual studies. We examine various methodological approaches and issues, including biography, connoisseurship, formalism, iconography, semiotics, social and new art histories, feminism, visual and cultural studies, institutional critique, post-colonialism, and geography.
