- (i) Health Sciences First Year students must sit a compulsory English diagnostic test in late February. Students who do not pass the test will be required to enrol in ENGL126. (ii) Students who completed the Foundation Studies Certificate in June and intend to enrol in Health Sciences First Year the next year should not select ENGL126 in Semester 2 of the same year as the Foundation Studies Certificate.

Students who successfully complete this paper will be able to:
- Recognise the structure of a typical university lecture or seminar and take effective notes
- Apply a sound knowledge of grammatical and syntactical structures in English to their writing in this and other subjects
- Identify the topic and key points of an advanced-level periodical or journal article
- Summarise an article of advanced standard in a coherent paragraph that orders points in a logical way and expresses ideas clearly
- Apply the conventions of academic written English to their written work
- Formulate a clear argument and take a critical stance on a given topic and analyse essays and articles that do the same
- Write a formal letter that demonstrates the conventions of the form as well as elements of persuasive rhetoric in its subject matter
- Prepare an individual presentation that clearly explains a topic to their tutorial group so that all members of the group understand it
- Prepare a collaborative group presentation that requires teamwork to solve a given problem
- Consider the differences between communication in English across gender and culture and identify how these differences may result in miscommunication
- Use information technologies to facilitate individual study of English and assist them in information retrieval in other subjects
- Transfer the skills taught in ENGL 126 to work in other subjects
