Maori obesity must be taken seriously

Friday, 14 August 2015

Rachael McLean, Lisa Te Morenga and our colleague Moana Theodore from Pysch have just published a commentary "Challenges to addressing obesity for Maori in Aotearoa/New Zealand” in the Australia and New Zealand Journal of Public Health. They argue that Maori obesity must be taken seriously particularly as rates continue to rise in Maori women. Individualistic approaches to educate people to make healthy lifestyle choices are not enough on their own. The social determinants of health must be addressed and the government must take action to create healthier food environments that make the healthy choice the easy choice.
