Dr Skidmore researches in the area of food choice and activity; how this relates to risk of chronic conditions; psychosocial determinants of food choice and the role of the physical environment in food choice and activity.

Paula is from Northern Ireland and gained her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Science and her PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from Queen’s University, Belfast. Before coming to Otago she worked as a research fellow in Nutritional Epidemiology at several UK institutions including the MRC National Survey of Health and Development at University College London and at the University of East Anglia.

Paula’s primary research focus is on lifecycle nutrition and how social and environmental factors affect food choice and activity and subsequent risk of chronic disease in large population studies. She is currently involved in the following projects:

The Canterbury Health, Ageing and Life Course (CHALICE) study - a longitudinal study investigating determinants of healthy ageing in 1000 fifty year olds.

The Otago Secondary Students Lifestyle Surveys (OSSLS1 & 2) – a study of two cohorts of year 9 to 13 students from Otago schools investigating psychosocial and environmental correlates of food choice and activity and body composition. We are also investigating correlates of physical fitness in a subsample of OSSLS2 participants.

Paula’s secondary research area is the development of novel research tools for use in epidemiological studies. She is currently involved in projects involving development of:

• FFQs for use in New Zealand toddlers, children and adults
• Electronic food diaries and other forms of dietary assessment for use in adolescents
• Indicators of overall dietary quality in various age groups and instruments to assess home food availability
• Questionnaires to assess psychosocial and environmental determinants of food choice and physical activity.

Teaching Areas

Paula teaches in several undergraduate and postgraduate Human Nutrition papers as well as contributing to undergraduate medical and physical education teaching. She teaches dietary assessment, nutritional epidemiology including prevention of chronic disease, psychosocial factors influencing food choice and diet in children and adolescents. She co-ordinates the following courses.

HUNT222 Diets, vitamins and Health
HUNT313 Lifecycle Nutrition
