BS (UW), MPH (UC), PhD (UC)

Anne Williams image 2021Email anne.williams@otago.ac.nz

Dr. Williams recently joined the team at Otago, coming from a tenure of experience with the International Micronutrient Malnutrition Prevention and Control at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). At CDC she worked with foreign governments to develop strategies for nutrition surveillance. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Hubert Department of Global Health at Emory University. Her research includes the dynamic relationship of nutrition and infectious diseases, strategies to prevent micronutrient malnutrition, and the dual burden of over- and undernutrition. Her work has contributed to global guidance for micronutrient assessment.

Dr. Williams is the Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Human Nutrition at Otago. She was drawn to Otago based on her interests in climate change and nutrition with a focus on the South Pacific that builds on a fisheries science background. Dr. Williams received her B.S. from the School of Aquatic and Fisheries Science at the University of Washington, Seattle and worked among the fishing industry in Alaska for five years prior to pursuing advanced degrees in public health.  She received her M.P.H. in 2010 and a Ph.D. in nutritional biology with an emphasis in International Nutrition from the University of California, Davis in 2015. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Medicine at Emory University where she co-instructed a graduate course on the Global Elimination of Micronutrient Malnutrition.

In 2021, Dr. Williams will lead a new course at Otago, International Nutrition (HUNT346). She strives to prepare and motivate students for the complex and interdisciplinary projects that the 21st century requires.
