The University of Otago is an Accredited Employer with Immigration New Zealand (INZ) under the new accreditation system which came into effect in July 2022. This enables us to offer roles to candidates who are not New Zealand citizens or residents. We will do what we can to support you with your Visa application.

Types of relevant work visas we can support include:

  • Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
  • Straight to Residence Visa

Newly appointed employees who need any type of work visa in order to take up the role offered, can only start working with us once their work visa has been granted.

Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

This visa is suitable for successful candidates who have been offered a role that meets the median wage threshold (please see the Immigration NZ website for the latest amount), and that involves at least 30 hours per week.

When applying for this type of visa, you will also need to be able to show INZ that you:

  • Have the required experience and / or qualifications for the job
  • Meet the health and character requirements, and
  • Have met, or are able to meet the necessary New Zealand occupational registration requirements to take up the offer (if required)

This visa allows you to live and work in New Zealand for up to 5 years. It also has a 'multiple entry' facility, which means that once the visa is granted, it will allow travel in and out of New Zealand during its validity. More information about the AEWV is available on the INZ website.

Straight to Residence Visa

This visa is suitable for successful candidates who have been offered a role that is on Tier 1 of INZ's Green List.

When applying for this type of visa, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Have the required experience and / or qualifications for the job

  • Have met, or are able to meet the necessary New Zealand occupational registration requirements to take up the offer (if required)

You can either apply for this type of visa from outside New Zealand, or come to NZ via obtaining an AEWV visa first, and then apply for this visa once you are in New Zealand.
This visa allows you to live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely. You can also include your partner and dependent children aged 24 or under (conditions apply for children).
