Senior Teaching Fellow

Position

Senior Teaching Fellow is a title no longer offered by the University of Otago. Existing staff may continue to hold the title.

Senior Teaching Fellows typically teach across a range of courses at undergraduate level. This includes assessment and course administration duties, usually a leadership role in the administration of a programme. Senior Teaching Fellows may have significant course administration responsibilities including curriculum design. Senior Teaching Fellows are not normally involved in supervising students for Masters or Doctoral Theses.

It is expected that academic staff will be routinely at work on campus so they are available to assist students and for students to see the University as a place of active scholarship.

Expectations

Teaching, assessment and curriculum development

It is expected that Senior Teaching Fellows:

  1. conduct research-informed teaching across a range and level of courses in accordance with their share of the Department or School’s teaching programme
  2. teach to a standard which meets the quality standards expected in the Department/School and profession.

It is expected that Senior Teaching Fellows may be:

  1. demonstrating leadership in the development of quality assured assessment methods, course design and curriculum development
  2. preparing and developing course plans, responsible for programme design and construction, outlines and materials for delivery of classes, in consultation with other senior colleagues
  3. facilitating learning by presenting lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops and papers
  4. fostering the development of individual student talent
  5. developing assessment material and methods related to courses taught
  6. guiding and mentoring other staff in the development of appropriate assessment material
  7. providing assessment and feedback to students on their progress towards learning outcomes
  8. providing course advice
  9. acting as the convenor of one or more papers
  10. attracting and successfully supervising postgraduate students
  11. starting to demonstrate an ability to inspire high academic endeavour and original thought with respect to teaching.

Senior Teaching Fellows normally will not supervise postgraduate students.

Research and/or advancing professional practice and scholarship activities

Senior Teaching Fellows may be:

  1. undertaking research and/or scholarly activities related to teaching/learning/education and/or professional practice.

Service to the University and the community

It is expected that Senior Teaching Fellows:

  1. make a significant contribution to administration in their Department or School.

It is expected that Senior Teaching Fellows may be:

  1. representing the Department through contributions to committees, working parties etc within the Division, or the wider University (including the Māori Strategic Framework)
  2. sharing knowledge with the community outside the University and contributing to local and national communities through involvement in the development of policy, practice, and cultural activities (eg: iwi/Māori development)
  3. contributing to the profession/discipline

Other

It is expected that Senior Teaching Fellows:

  1. take an active interest in the activities relating to the Department
  2. meet all compliance and reporting requirements
  3. work collegially with staff and students in the Department, School, Division and the University.

Employment conditions

Requirements

  • Masters Degree minimum or other relevant postgraduate qualifications;
  • Extensive teaching experience including curriculum design

Salary Progressions

One step annually on salary scale through to step 3 of the scales, subject to satisfactory performance.
