TITLE: Understanding Timbre: Science and Music
SPEAKERS: Geoff Wyvill and Joshua La Pine, Department of Computer Science
LOCATION: Owheo G34 - 1:00 pm, Friday 13 October
The sounds made by a clarinet, a guitar and a violin are very different and anyone with normal hearing can learn to recognise them. But it has proved very difficult to program a computer to do this. To understand the reason, we must look at the history of applying science to musical sound, what we know and why a musician's understanding is important to the scientist.
Come and enjoy the ride. There will be history, music, mathematics and (of course) chocolate.
