I was born in Zimbabwe and spent most of my formative years living in a safari park until my whole family moved to mid Canterbury in the early 2000's. Here in NZ I picked up skiing, climbing (mountains, rocks, and most things between), and then surfing, with the latter being my initial motivation to move to Dunedin in the first place. Along the way I also completed bachelors and then masters degrees in electrical engineering at the University of Canterbury. My masters work (in computer vision for autonomous drones) lead to spending several years developing computer vision systems for robotic milking at Scott Technology, which in turn lead to contact with the Otago HCI group and my decision to move to Dunedin to surf and pursue a PhD with the group. My thesis topic will be the mixed reality 'turing test' with the general goal of developing a voxel-based immersive mixed reality system where virtual things are indistinguishable from real things.
