Exchange Experiences

The University, City and Region

The University

Corvinus University is a relatively small institution (approximately 16,500 students) in the heart of Europe. In economics and business it awards approximately half the total number of diplomas in the country, and in many other areas is acknowledged as a market leader. In several areas (including public administration) it is the sole provider of higher education in Hungary.

Links with business are important: the university has ten business endorsed chairs. The university is also a member of CEMS (the Community of European Management Schools) and PIM (the global Programme for International Management). In the Financial Times ranking the MSc in Business Administration received 25th place on the TOP 35 list of European Master in Management programs.

In the last decade the university has established programmes in English, German and French. The English language unit, ISC (International Studies Centre) receives students from all over the world.

The City of Budapest and Region

Budapest, known as the 'Queen of the Danube', is a magnificent city gracing both sides of the legendary river with historic buildings, regal bridges and graceful tree-lined boulevards. For some, the city has acquired a Parisian status among Eastern European cities.

The city was originally two cities built on either side of the Danube, namely Buda and Pest. The two districts are still distinct, with the older and more charming Buda containing cobbled streets, picturesque coloured houses and a medieval, neo-Classical mixture of architecture set among the hills of the west bank. It is famous for its historic Castle Hill featuring the Royal Palace, museums and galleries, St Matthias Church and the ramparts of Fisherman's Bastion.

A history of numerous wars and invasions, with repeated destruction and rebuilding, has created the Budapest of today.

Budapest offers visitors the familiarity of European culture with a distinct Hungarian flavour. It is evident in the neo-Gothic Parliament buildings, sidewalk cafes serving Magyar cuisine, classical concerts, Hungarian folk music, medieval neighbourhoods and shady parks. Visitor highlights include a river cruise on the Danube and a thermal bath in one of the Turkish-era bathhouses.

Hungary is a meeting point of cultures. Hungarian culture was not only able to safeguard and renew its own values and traditions, but it has always been able to accept the influence of other cultures. This small country, brimming with culture and natural beauty, proudly possesses one of the finest capital cities in the world – Budapest. Uniquely, it is also endowed with two-thousand-year-old Roman remains, four-hundred-year-old monuments from the Turkish period, beautiful Romanesque churches, examples of the pinnacle of neo-Gothic and art nouveau architecture, and castles that are still imposing even though they have long since fallen into ruin.
