Special Area Studies (SAS-Courses)

Lund University offers exchange students the opportunity to take additional courses, outside of their chosen studies in a wide range of subjects including Sweden but also European and Global issues.

Swedish language courses

Lund University offers Swedish Language courses to interested exchange students.

Semester dates

  • Academic Year: September - June 
  • Autumn Term: September - January 
  • Spring Term: January - June

Please note: Otago semester one exchanges only, due to difficult accommodation issues in September.

A full time course load is 30 ECTS per semester.

Accommodation and the cost of living


The International Housing Office (IHO) administers a limited number of rooms at dormitories in Lund. Please note that at the beginning of the academic year in Sweden (September) accommodation is extremely difficult to find, therefore we have been asked to send our exchange students in the spring semester, starting in January (Otago semester one).

The University, city and region

The University

Lund University main buildingLund University was founded in 1666. Today it is an international centre for research and education that has approximately 46 000 students. Lund University is ranked as one of the best universities in Europe by several different, and respected, ranking studies. There are over 500 professors actively involved in cutting-edge teaching and research, across a broad range of fields. The culture in Lund is characterized by the large student population and student traditions. A substantial part of the nightlife is located at student fraternities called 'Nations'.

City Building in LundAlong with Sigtuna, Lund is the oldest city in present-day Sweden. Lund is located in Southern Sweden. This part of Sweden is close to Denmark. The city has striking architecture and, in a city of 110 000 people of which approximately 46 000 are students the atmosphere is vibrant and stimulating.
