Exchange Experiences

The University, City and Region

The University

Stockholm School of Economics (SSE), founded in 1909 by royal statute, is the oldest private Swedish institution of university standing and enjoys a prestigious position in Swedish economic life. Many leading executives and politicians have their degree from the School, including several former ministers of finance. For an increasing number of companies, SSE plays a significant role in their European recruitment effort.

The majority of the School's students are Swedish citizens and 40% of them are women. Competition for admittance to the MSc programme is high. Approximately 3,400 applicants apply for the 300 places available each year with admission grades being the highest required of any academic institution in Sweden. Students also often have substantial work experience and/or degrees in other areas.

The School is fully accredited by EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System); is a member of the Partnership in International Management (PIM)-a consortium of leading business schools from five continents co-operating on student exchanges; and is also a member of the Community of European Management Schools (CEMS).

The City of Stockholm and Region

Stockholm, built across 14 islands and often called the Venice of the North, receives more foreign visitors than any other city in Scandinavia. It is situated at the point where the vast Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea, having been built on this strategic spot in the mid 13th century to enable merchant vessels going in and out of the lake to be taxed.

As water covers one third of the city area, the maritime life is an important aspect of the city. There are plenty of bridges, marinas and locks. The water is so clean that you can drink it, and salmon are caught in the middle of the city.

In Stockholm you will find a rich cultural life, a multitude of museums, many international restaurants, and a wealth of modern entertainment.
