The Otago International Friendship Network (OIFN)

Only Otago students outside the clocktower

The Otago International Friendship Network (OIFN) connects international and domestic students with local and international cultures. This is a great network for new international students to join to help meet people and get support through the transition of moving to a new place. Membership is open to all Otago students and is a fun and friendly way of socialising and making new connections to people and other cultures.

There is a programme of fun and interesting events running throughout each main semester period, with various activities you can be part of. Everyone is welcome to join OIFN no matter what stage of your journey at Otago you are in, and it is a great place for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

OIFN events are run and managed by a fantastic group of volunteer Host students in partnership with the International Office student advisor team. This group of volunteers and staff are available to answer questions and provide support for international students making the transition to living in Dunedin and studying at Otago.

Our first event for 2019 is on Sunday 24th Feb, and this is a great chance to come along and join the programme if you are not already a member. This event will lead straight into the OUSA’s International Food Festival, so is a great way to start an exciting evening of chatting and then eating! See the events list below for more details.

Become a Host: Application for current/returning University of Otago students who wish to join the Host Partner programme.

This is a great volunteer position which allows you to contribute to the International student community at Otago! You will be trained and work with an awesome team of volunteers to organise events, provide peer support and your student’s experience of University life – sharing experiences, challenges and insights. You will help foster a sense of belonging for international students on campus through both the cultural events, morning teas and a variety of other events.

To be an Otago Host Partner you must have be a current student and also have been here for at least one semester previous to the current one. You will need to be able to commit to being involved for at least six months, and will be able to continue your involvement longer if you wish. If you are interested and think you have the qualities (friendly, positive, open-minded and organised) to make a great host partner, please fill in the application form and we will get back to you with more information.
