The Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia (PMSA)

The PMSA is an outbound scholarship programme funded by the New Zealand government. The application and selection process for the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia is managed by Education New Zealand. Otago students going on exchange to partner universities in Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand are eligible to apply.

  • Scholarship value: NZ$270 per week and $2,000 flight
  • Application criteria: open for New Zealand citizens or Permanent Resident holders; recipients must spend a minimum of six weeks actively on programme in Asia.

Canada

The Brian Merrilees Canadian Alumni Travel Award

As a result of the generosity of the Alumni of the University of Otago in Canada the Canadian Alumni Travel Awards have been established to provide financial support to a number of students who select a Canadian Partner for their student exchange destination.

  • Up to two awards valued at NZ$2,000 each (ideally one award each for East, West and Central Canada) will be granted to students studying at an exchange partner university in Canada in 2020.
  • Application deadline: 17 October 2019 (for Otago students starting an exchange in semester one and in semester two 2020). Detailed application instructions will be emailed to all eligible applicants in September 2019.

The Otago Global Student Exchange Programme is very grateful to the Alumni of the University of Otago in Canada for their support. This award is reviewed annually.

Western Law - The Cheryl Waldrum Scholarship in Law

Established in 2001 in memory of Cheryl Waldrum who died in January 2001, just a few days short of her 44th birthday. Cheryl was a law graduate of the University of Western Ontario and the University of Otago and was a member of the academic staff at both institutions. This scholarship is intended to assist undergraduate law students from the University of Otago taking papers at the Law Faculty of the University of Western Ontario as part of the Student Exchange Agreement between these two Law Faculties.
The scholarship has a maximum value of NZ$ 2,000 per year and may be awarded annually to one applicant or shared by two applicants.

Germany

DAAD

The DAAD is Germany’s largest scholarship-awarding organisation and runs several programs with which academic exchange between Germany and all parts of the world is supported. These programs range from short-term exchanges for research or teaching purposes through to doctoral scholarships lasting several years.

University of Heidelberg - Baden-Württemberg Scholarship

Exchange students applying to the University of Heidelberg are eligible to apply for the Baden-Württemberg Scholarship. Application information and forms will be forwarded to you by your Exchange Adviser. Please note that all applications must be sent to the University of Heidelberg by Otago’s Exchange Adviser. Applications sent directly to Heidelberg will not be considered.

Japan

JASSO Scholarship (all universities)

In order to promote increased friendship and understanding between Japan and other countries around the world, the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers a limited number of scholarships each year as part of its "Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program (Inbound)". Each participating Japanese university has their own requirements and application forms. Relevant information will be forwarded to Otago students applying to go on exchange to Japan.

JASSO will provide the following financial aid to qualified students:
Stipend: ¥80,000 per month (NZ$1,070) for up to 12 months.

Hirosaki University, Tohoku

Hirosaki University offer a limited number of subsidized accommodations to students who have not been awarded a scholarship. The monthly rent for the subsidized accommodation is 5900 yen per month, compared to around 30,000 per month for unsubsidised rent.

Japan Study Grants

The Asia New Zealand Foundation's Japan grants are designed to encourage students to participate in exchanges to Japan; increase linkages between New Zealand and Japan; and contribute to students' academic programme.

  • The $1000 grants, which are kindly funded by Nakashimato Co Ltd, are a contribution towards study costs.
  • Applications close on Friday 16 August 2019.
  • This round of funding can only be used for trips between 15 September 2019 to 31 December 2020.

Latin America

Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Latin America (PMSLA)

Programme funded by the New Zealand government and administered by Education New Zealand. The scholarship aims to strengthen New Zealand institutions’ connections with their counterparts in key Latin America countries; promote understanding of the strength and quality of New Zealand’s education system and raise awareness in Latin America of New Zealand as a preferred education destination; improve the international skills of the New Zealand workforce; strengthen people to people connections between New Zealand and countries in Latin America through participants building lifelong friendships and networks; strengthen New Zealand’s ability to engage with key Latin American trading partners; improve New Zealanders’ understanding of Latin American business practice and culture.

Deadline: 30 April and 30 August.

United Kingdom

BUTEX Scholarships

Each year BUTEX awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year.

The BUTEX Scholarships are open to Otago undergraduate students on exchange to a UK partner university which is BUTEX affliated. Your exchange placement does not need to have been confirmed by your host university when you apply for BUTEX, but will need to have been formally confirmed at the time of scholarship award.

Application deadline: 31 May each year (for S1, S2 or full year exchange)

United States of America

The Alumni of the University of Otago in America Inc Award

As a result of the generosity of the Alumni of the University of Otago in America, the Alumni of the University of Otago in America Inc Awards have been established to provide financial support to a number of students who select a US Partner for their student exchange destination.

  • Up to 12 awards valued at NZ$2,000 each will be granted to students studying at an exchange partner university in the United States in 2020. Ideally a minimum of one award will be available per exchange partner in the USA. To qualify, the study must be part of the Otago Global Student Exchange Programme.
  • Application deadline: 17 October 2019 (for Otago students starting an exchange in semester one and in semester two 2020). Detailed application instructions will be emailed to all eligible applicants in September 2019.
