The University, City and Region
Founded in 1944, Universidad Veracruzana is considered one of the leading public universities in Mexico. Its mission is threefold: to generate knowledge and preserve culture, to teach and to learn, and to disseminate culture and to extend services.
Spread throughout the state, the University has twenty three research institutes and seventy-four professional schools which offer fifty-three undergraduate and eighty-two graduate programs. The University has over 58,000 students in its five regions in fourteen cities.
The City of Xalapa
Xalapa, capital of the state of Veracruz, is a quaint colonial city that is surrounded by various rivers, streams and springs. It features colonial architecture, enviable coastal mountain climate (1426 meters) and a cool cafe scene related to the town's University of Veracruz.
Xalapeños, as the city's residents are called, refer to their city as "The Athens of Veracruz" for its large creative community and vibrant art scene. The labyrinthine of hilly cobble stoned streets can test your hiking skills while the views and open space will reward you.
Orient yourself around Parque Juárez at the city centre. The park's terraced gardens feature views of Mexico's highest peak, the 5,610 Pico de Orizaba as well as the adjacent, imposing Palacio del Gobierno (open 6am to 9pm). Take pleasure in your surroundings and various attractions that the beautiful city of Xalapa has to offer.
