The 9th annual conference of the Otago Global Health Institute will take place at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery 2-3 November 2016.

Hosted by the University of Otago's Centre for International Health, the Otago Global Health Institute (OGHI) conference brings together people within and beyond the University once a year to foster collaboration and inter-disciplinary work on the developing world's most pressing health problems.

This year's meeting is being held in conjunction with the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID) New Zealand Annual Scientific Meeting at the same venue 3-5 November 2016. The ASID meeting convenes New Zealand's community of infectious diseases physicians, medical microbiologists, and antimicrobial pharmacists.

The two conferences will be bridged by the 2016 McKinlay Oration entitled “Towards the global elimination of rabies: evidence, interventions, and impact,” presented by world authority on rabies, Professor Sarah Cleaveland from the University of Glasgow. This public lecture will take place 7pm-8pm at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on Thursday 3 November 2016.

Professor Paul Newton, Director of the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit in Vientiane, Laos, an expert on fever in the tropics and poor quality medicines in low-resource countries, and Associate Professor Scott Beatson, University of Queensland, an expert on the spread of antimicrobial resistance genes, are the invited international keynote speakers at the ASID conference.

“This is the first time that New Zealand's major global health and infectious diseases conferences have been held back-to-back,” says Professor Crump, organiser of this year's OGHI conference.

“We have designed the programmes to stimulate cross-talk between infectious diseases and global health experts,” says Dr James Ussher, who is organising the ASID conference. “In an interconnected world progress in infectious diseases requires collaboration across disciplines and between countries. We are delighted to be welcoming our close collaborators from Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos, The Gambia, Australia, and elsewhere to these meetings.”

Between the two conferences there are around 150 delegates expected to attend.
