The University of Otago signed a memorandum of understanding with University of Medicine 1, Yangon, Myanmar (also known as Burma) in November 2012 to collaborate on research, training, and development. University of Medicine 1 is Myanmar’s first medical school.

Initial activities have focused on infectious diseases and medical microbiology, linked to postgraduate student research, particularly on the syndrome of fever and tuberculosis.
