Scam Phone Calls from the "Microsoft Service Department"

Time Frame: Beginning this morning (Ongoing)

Audience: All those with a University phone extension

Description:

Reports have been received today about phone calls from an Indian call centre claiming to be the "Microsoft Service Department". These are bogus calls that are similar in nature to the ones that home phone numbers have been receiving for several years.

Please do not follow any instructions from these callers as the intention is to infect your computer with malware. Simply hang up on the caller.

If you receive a phone call purporting to be from the ITS Service Desk, and you don't recall logging a call with us or are at all doubtful about it please ask the caller for the Ask IT call number, hang up and call the ITS Service Desk back to confirm (phone numbers below).

Our Information Security Office is working to determine the extent of this scam and ways to control it.
