Information: macOS Big Sur 11 Support at the University of Otago, Nov 2020 - Ongoing

Information: macOS Big Sur 11 support at the University of Otago

Timeframe: November 2020 - ongoing

Services Affected: macOS Big Sur 11

Audience: All University computer users

Description: macOS Big Sur was released to end users on November 12, 2020, as a free upgrade through the Mac App Store. ITSS do not recommend upgrading to any new operating system until it is at least three months old, this is to allow any problems to be resolved. However, there are still problems with Big Sur and the University printing system (UniFLOW), anti-virus software (Sophos), and VPN software (Cisco AnyConnect), so we do not recommend upgrading to Big Sur at this time. See exception below.

ITSS supported versions of macOS are:

  • macOS Mojave 10.14: from January 2019 to late 2021
  • macOS Catalina 10.15: from January 2020 to late 2022

On new Macs that cannot run macOS Catalina 10.15, from January 2021 to late 2023, macOS Big Sur 11 is supported.

Macs with older versions of macOS should be upgraded to an ITSS supported version, preferably macOS Catalina 10.15, or retired if they cannot run a supported operating system.
