Malware and Virus Detection

What is malware?

Malware is ‘malicious’ software such as viruses, spyware, trojans, rootkits, worms, adware and scareware.

The University of Otago uses Sophos anti-virus software to protect your computer from malware.

What should I do?

If you think your computer has been infected by malware please contact your departmental IT support for help.

  • In many cases the operating system of an infected computer will have to be completely reinstalled to rid it of malware.
  • To avoid losing important files, please make sure you regularly backup your work onto an external hard-drive or USB drive, your departmental file-store, or use suitable backup software.

Please contact AskOtago for further assistance.
