HIST247 Empires Strike Back: A Global History of Decolonization

A critical examination of the global history of decolonization in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific.

This paper fosters a critical understanding of the complex and often violent process of decolonization and the making of independent nation-states in the twentieth century, drawing on case studies from key regions around the globe as well as contextualising these examples in broader developments.

  • A critical awareness of key scholarly debates about decolonization, anticolonialism, and the making of new states
  • A refined capacity to engage with contemporary debates relating to the legacies of empire and postcolonial challenges by drawing on historical examples and conceptual definitions of decolonization
