Aleisha Lord - BA French & BSc EconomicsPicture Aleisha Lord

About my studies:
I started my studies at Otago in 2013 and graduated in 2016. I undertook a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in French, and a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Economics. Throughout my studies, I have taken a huge range of papers – from environmental economics, financial mathematics, and the economics of developing countries, to seventeenth century French culture, classical studies, and art history. In terms of my French studies, I had only ever taken introductory French at high school, so over the last four years I have moved from taking the most basic French course that the university offers through to the most advanced language and culture papers – it has been an incredible experience!

Achievements:
During my time at university, I was lucky to have been supported by my two departments – the Department of Languages and Cultures, and the Department of Economics. With the help of incredible teaching staff and classmates, I have received some great results and picked up a few scholarships and prizes along the way.
In 2015, I won the Alliance Française de Dunedin Prize.
In 2016, I won the UBS Flaubert Prize in French Literature, Misses Miller Braemar House School Scholarship in French, and the Premier Undergraduate Prize for Humanities.
The prizes have been nice achievements, but in all honesty, my greatest achievement has been learning a new language to the extent that I can meet and socialize with people from different countries and cultures, understand foreign films and music, and put a competitive edge on my CV.

Plans:
In 2018, I hope to travel to France again to put my language skills to use, and eat macarons until my heart gives out. After that, I'll come back to New Zealand and settle into a career. I have just finished an internship at PwC, so who knows? Maybe I'll rejoin the firm in a couple of years and apply for a transfer to Paris!
