Entry into the Bachelor of Laws with Honours (LLB(Hons)) programme is usually through invitation. You can also apply to enter the programme but will need to meet certain criteria.
Entry to LLB(Hons)
If you average at least B+ in your 4 second-year Law papers and your marks place you in the top 10% of the class, you may be invited into the Bachelor of Laws with Honours (LLB(Hons)) programme.
You can also apply to enter the programme, but you need to have completed at least 105 points at 300- and 400-level and be only partially through your Bachelor of Laws degree.

The LLB(Hons) programme
Like the LLB, the LLB(Hons) degree is also a 4-year programme. Students will complete the same programme as LLB students, but must also submit a research paper in their final year.
Generally, honours degrees require an additional year of study; the fact the LLB(Hons) can be completed within the same timeframe as the LLB is an advantage for students of Law at Otago.
Research paper
The critical component of the honours programme is the research paper – otherwise known as the honours dissertation – which counts for 60 points and is completed during your final year.
