The use of the photograph depicting the Bellapaix Abbey with the 'Tree of Idleness', combined with the dark lettering and the barely distinguishable lemon-shaped woodcut, certainly captures the essence of Durrell's impressionistic study of the moods and atmospheres of Cyprus. This first edition copy was probably designed by Berthold Wolpe.
