John Moffett, one time Editor of the Otago Daily Times, had heard of Sid Scales' artistic ability and sought to the bring the Ashburton boy's talent southwards. Moffett finally invited Scales (1916 - 2002) to Dunedin for an all-expenses-paid weekend and treated him to a sumptuous lunch at The Club, or, as Scales recalls: 'The editor filled me full of gin and pulled a contract out of his pocket'. His first cartoon appeared in the Otago Daily Times in 1951, and his last, almost thirty years and 6000 cartoons later, in 1981. Here Scales applied his skill to create an effective webbed look for Glasson's work about the Otago goldfields. No doubt Scales ' ODT connections helped him in obtain the design commission.
