Wilberforce

‘William Wilberforce to Everyman’ is an extract from John Caselberg’s Duaterra King, a play based on the life of Ruatara, a Maori chief in the Bay of Plenty, who assisted Samuel Marsden to establish the first mission in New Zealand, 1814. It was written while he was the Burns Fellow in 1961, and given a reading at the Auckland Art Gallery in 1962. Designed as a ‘player’s part’ and as a hanging, the poem was set by Ted Ashby and the English Honours class of 1972, and printed in an edition of 300 copies by Laing and Matthews. It sold for 20 cents.
