Unpublished Writings of James Stephens

Unpublished Writings of James Stephens

Arthur Griffith was the editor of the United Irishman, a paper which later became Sinn Féin, the official organ of the new Sinn Féin party. In 1905, Griffith accepted for publication James Stephens's first short story 'The Greatest Miracle'. Stephens continued to contribute to the paper essays on ethics, poetry, and Sinn Féin propaganda. A tribute to his patron - Arthur Griffith: Journalist and Statesman - appeared in 1922. The four-foot ten Stephens also wrote under pseudonyms of James Esse, Shemus Beg, Samuel James, Seuman James, and Stephen James. These in part explain the title James, Seumas & Jacques, a work that contains previously unpublished writings by the writer designated 'the Leprechaun of Irish literature.'
