New Zealanders at Home

After completing her 1998 Ph. D thesis on domestic interiors in New Zealand, Anna Petersen submitted her work to UOP. While the text contextualizes the history, it is the photographs that are the gems. Each records the fashion, finery, and fixtures (or not) inside New Zealand houses before the First World War. Such documentary evidence is scarce and Petersen – along with the Press – was determined to create the best resource possible. A colour transparency of Thomas Ryan's 'Interior of Whare' (c.1891) was generously supplied by the auction house Dunbar Sloane for the cover.
