Defence of Madrid

Professor Paul Preston calls Geoffrey Cox's Defence of Madrid ‘one of the most important books ever written on the Spanish Civil War.' The Press had published Cox's European memoir Eyewitness in 1999 and when it was suggested by members of the Trade Union History Project in Wellington that the Press should reprint Defence of Madrid for the seventieth anniversary of the war, the Press happily agreed. The book was first published in 1937 by the left-wing publisher Victor Gollancz. Sir Geoffrey Cox was an Otago University graduate, a Rhodes scholar, a distinguished journalist and founder of Independent Television's News at Ten. The first edition is also on display.
