Ka Rikarika a Tāne | Mentoring Programme

When a student embarks on a course of study at university they may find the system to be confusing and unfriendly without their usual support systems in place. To make the transition as stress-free as possible for students the Māori Centre (Te Huka Mātauraka) has developed Ka Rikarika a Tāne, a mentoring programme that aims to provide support networks and a friendly, whānau environment for Māori students based on the customary Māori methodologies.

Programme details

The mentoring programme is designed for students who are enrolled as Māori studying at the University of Otago. Participants are matched with a mentor who is either a senior student or staff member in their chosen area of study.

  • Meet once a week to provide on-going support and guidance.
  • Attend hui with other mentors and mentees, staff from the Māori Centre and department faculties.
  • Participate in various activities at hui.
