Ismail has extensive experience of tourism marketing, working for the Maldives government, marketing the Maldives as a tourist destination for more than ten years. He utilises his marketing experience in teaching tourism and marketing courses as well as supporting various tourism stakeholders (public and private) in the Maldives.

He completed a PhD in tourism (University of Otago) and a Masters in Tourism Marketing (University of Surrey, UK).

He has experience teaching at Maldives National University, Otago University, and Lincoln University.

His research focuses on tourist behaviour, ethics, social media, and media-induced tourism (particularly video-game induced tourism).

Ismail's current research projects include video games and event tourism, impact of tourist photography, and negative tourist behaviours and its wider impact on the tourism system.
