Purnima Singh says Otago’s Master of Business Administration studies have enabled her to take her start-up business to the next level.
While working as Marketing Director for a family-owned skincare distribution business, Purnima was inspired to investigate coconut oil products that would be beneficial for both babies and mums.
As a result, she co-founded Loloma, a company that works with suppliers in Fiji to source raw materials at fair trade prices.
Why Otago MBA?
“With Zoom, I did not feel like I was missing a classroom setting as it was very interactive and collaborative.”
To help grow her business knowledge, Purnima enrolled in Otago’s MBA.
“I chose Otago because it was a prestigious university offering the number-one ranked MBA programme in New Zealand.”
Benefits of online study
Purnima was based overseas so the option of studying online allowed her to balance family, work and academic commitments.
“The flexibility of studying from a home environment was perfect for me. With Zoom, I did not feel like I was missing a classroom setting as it was very interactive and collaborative. I was challenged in classes, had many opportunities to present and was very fortunate to be able to carry out a lot of research for my start-up.”
Purnima also took advantage of Otago’s exchange programme and went to Vienna WU.
“This was an amazing experience. I became friends with a diverse range of people and learnt from experienced lecturers who challenged my thinking.”
After graduating, she focused on business and managed to gain entry into large distributors in US online platforms.
“My studies definitely elevated me forward to be more confident in running a business. I feel I have received the most up-to-date knowledge in all facets of a business, and the programme helped me to deepen my understanding and outlook on global markets.”
The Otago MBA experience
She describes the MBA as an exciting and challenging journey that leads to “immense” personal growth, life-long relationships, and rewarding connections.
“The Otago MBA has taught me to be a critical thinker, to be articulate and concise, and to work in diverse environments with people from all walks of life. It has also given me confidence in the practicality of business. I really feel prepared me for my future endeavours.”
