The Otago MBA, as an internationally focused programme, wanted to grow its international footprint to engage with a wider range of potential students. China is the second largest economy in the world and an increasingly important component of the global economy. It was a natural progression to expand the online MBA into China.
The University of Otago has partnered with Beacon Education in China to provide the content and the teaching for the online Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme.
The first cohort of 25 students started in July 2020 with two intakes a year thereafter.
The Beacon partnership
Beacon Education and the University of Otago began consultation on the China online MBA in 2018, which resulted in a formal agreement being signed in 2019.
The University of Otago Department of Executive Programme is responsible for the partnership with Beacon Education.
The China online MBA was formally launched in June 2020 with a full cohort of students for its first intake. The cohort size is limited to 25 students to ensure collaboration, quality and interactive discussion.
The online MBA
The Otago Online MBA is an interactive, live and collaborative MBA programme of world-class standard. The Otago MBA online programme is ranked #10 globally.
The online programme is ideal for students who want a high-quality MBA education. Using Zoom, you will:
- Attend live weekly lectures
- Share interactive discussions with your classmates
- Participate in break-out sessions
You will be expected to attend all classes. The classes are also recorded for revision purposes.
The course content, learning outcomes, assessments and curriculum for the China online MBA are the same as our on-campus and #10 QS world ranked online MBA.
The China programme is overseen by the Director of Programme, Academic Director and independently review by an external examiner from National University of Singapore.
Structure of programme
The curriculum comprises 2 phases:
In Phase 1, students take 12 core papers.
Phase 2 - professional consulting requires a further 60 credits.
The online MBA classes are taught in Mandarin Chinese to provide a more immersive learning environment. This provides the opportunity to dig deeper into topics and discuss business issues more naturally.
The University places an emphasis on real live cases and replicating business environments. When students discuss topics in their second language, it is not always possible to have the same level of discussion across the class. By delivering the programme in Mandarin Chinese, we can ensure the level of interaction and dialogue between the teachers and students, and amongst the students themselves, is consistent.
It makes communication easier for everyone on the programme.
We believe that students learn as much from conversations between students as they do from the teachers.
To facilitate this, classes are taught live. As well as regular interaction with the teacher during the live class, students get to practice discussing and debating issues, which replicate real-life business environments as much as possible.
The international tuition fees are consistent across all the Otago MBA programmes, on-campus, online and China online.
Please contact Beacon Education directly for more details on fee payment options and details on financial benefits for applying early to the next intake.
For more information on international tuitions fees for the University of Otago MBA programme see otago.ac.nz/mba/online/fees
Typically international fees increase annually, recently by around 3-5 per cent per year.
Teaching staff on the China online MBA have all been carefully selected by the University of Otago Department of Executive Programmes.
The teaching roster includes faculty from the Otago Business School, adjunct academic teachers from reputable universities in China, Hong Kong and Singapore and international consultants from the professional training industry.
All teaching staff are all bilingual in both English and Mandarin Chinese. The Otago MBA requires all its teachers to have a mixture of both excellent teaching ability and practical business experience in their specialty field. This enables the teachers to keep content relevant and updated while preparing students for successful business and managerial careers outside of the learning environment.
