International teaching and industry experience

Born and raised in Canada, educated in the UK and currently living in New Zealand, Richard has taught Economics, Statistics, and Research Methods across the globe. He has authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles in a wide range of scholarly journals and has written a comparable number of consulting reports for government, industry, NGOs and think tanks.

Why Richard enjoys teaching in the MBA programme?

Otago MBA students have a critical eye and a worldly view. They look inquisitively at the world around them and ask questions about current events and trends and they use their experience to develop well-reasoned opinions. Their view, like mine, tends to be pragmatic – how can we make sense of what's going on? Does it create opportunities, or threats? Otago MBA students, with their global outlook and diverse backgrounds, bring an interesting perspective.

What global perspective is reflected in Richard's course/teaching?

Economics tries to make sense of the world around us. Increasingly events in one part of the world are quickly felt elsewhere. In our classes we try to look at what's going on in the world and to use analytical tools to develop an understanding of the impact they can have on individuals, businesses and governments.
