Research

My main research interests are in health policy and health systems research; health financing and universal health coverage (UHC) including health insurance systems; health systems governance and healthcare management; public policy analysis and implementation; and qualitative and mixed methods methodological issues in health.

In future, I hope to develop research around health disparities (inequality and inequity in access to health services), service delivery and organisation, and health care quality, especially methods of measurement and improvement. I am interested and willing to supervise postgraduate and honours students in these areas and other closely related fields.

Additional details

Adam holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Political Science with Study of Religions from the University of Ghana (UG) Legon, MPhil in Public Administration from the University of Bergen in Norway, MSocSc in Development and International Relations from Aalborg University in Denmark, and a PhD from the University of Ulster in the UK.

Following his PhD, Adam was awarded the prestigious and competitive South Africa’s Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI) inaugural Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Health Systems and Policy at the Centre for Health Policy (CHP), School of Public Health, the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. The focus of his postdoctoral study was on governance and accountability in public and private hospitals in South Africa as part of the SARChI project on leadership and governance, health workforce and health financing with access at the core as South Africa transitions towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) with the introduction of National Health Insurance (NHI).

Adam was then appointed a Lecturer at the Department of Health Policy, Planning and Management, School of Public Health, University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, Ghana, where taught courses in health policy, planning and management and health systems both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels from August 2015 to July 2018. Between 2010 and 2014, he was a PhD Researcher and postgraduate tutor in health and social care policy at the University of Ulster in Jordanstown, Northern Ireland. Adam's PhD explored the implementation of Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme from an actor-centred perspective from 2003-2013. Adam also served as a development associate intern with Consia Consultants APS in Copenhagen, Denmark between September and December 2008.

Adam is an honorary researcher at the Wits School of Public Health (WSPH), in Johannesburg, South Africa.
