Associate Professor George Thomson

PositionResearch Associate Professor
DepartmentDepartment of Public Health (Wellington)
QualificationsBA (History and Politics), Masters (Public Policy), PhD
Research summaryTobacco control, health policy and health politics.

George's research interests are in tobacco control, health policy and health politics. His work includes researching government and business behaviour as determinants of population health, with recent research covering:
  • The effects and ethics of tobacco taxation.
  • Smoking and smokefree areas outdoors and in vehicles .
  • Tobacco endgames.

His research has been funded by the Health Research Council, the Cancer Society, the Heart Foundation, and ASH NZ, and he has been a co-investigator on two Marsden Foundation funded projects.

Much of his work during 2007-2011 has been on the Health Research Council funded Smokefree Project: Policy decision making for smokefree kids which explored the determinants of policies that affect the extent of smoking around children. The focus was on the knowledge and attitudes of policymakers. Major findings included the little recorded New Zealand and international growth of outdoor smokefree area policies, which has had a major impetus from the public and policymaker wish to reduce the normality of smoking for children.

George is the policy and regulatory research theme leader for the ASPIRE 2025 research partnership for a tobacco free Aotearoa.
