Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP)

The Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP) is an option for a small number of Year 5 MB ChB students. These students are based in one of six small centres (Clutha, Marlborough, Southland, Tararua, Wairarapa, Westland), spending their time in general practices and smaller hospitals and working with local practitioners in an apprenticeship model.

RMIP was established in 2007 with a six-student pilot, and is aimed at encouraging students to consider specialising in rural practice. Since the first RMIP alumni graduated in 2008, an increasing number have either based themselves in smaller centres and/or undertaken further vocational training in General Practice or Rural Hospital Medicine.
