Early Learning in Medicine educational support

Associate Dean and Director, Early Learning in Medicine

The ELM Director leads the development and delivery of the Early Learning in Medicine (Years 2-3) stage of the  MB ChB curriculum.

The Director coordinates course delivery through liaison with module conveners and with Otago Medical School, Dunedin School of Medicine, and the School of Biomedical Sciences to ensure that ELM meets the overall objectives of the medical programme.

Associate Professor Grant Butt has been ELM Director since 2014. He was formerly Associate Dean Medical Education for the then-Otago School of Medical Sciences in which role he was the overall convener for ELM's medical science modules. He is also a physiologist and research leader.

Associate Dean Medical Education, School of Biomedical Sciences

The ADME, BMS is responsible for medical science education, particularly within the ELM curriculum. This role has specific responsibility for coordinating ELM medical science modules, and for supporting integration of medical science through to ALM.

The current ADME, Associate Professor Dorothy Oorschot, a neuroanatomist, also convenes the MB ChB Science, Research and Scholarship Sub-Committee.

Education Adviser (EA)

The Education Adviser is available to assist staff in a range of educational matters including: the planning, development, delivery, assessment and evaluation of courses, professional development, research with an educational focus and confirmation pathway processes.

Dr Jon Cornwall has a background in health science education, and took up the role in early 2018

eLearning Facilitator (eLF)

The eLearning Facilitator facilitates design and development of quality online, and blended, teaching and learning processes and assessment. The facilitator also collaborates with staff on related research.

Kimberley Johnston, an education design specialist, has been in this role since 2017.

e-Developer

ELM includes an programme of cases which integrate aspects of medical science, clinical practice, and patient and community perspectives. The cases programme is partially delivered online, and content is continually updated.

Judith Swan joined the medical school as an education researcher in 2008, and has been responsible for developing the e-cases since 2013.

Assessment Convener

ELM has a dedicated Assessment Convener whose role is to support conveners in developing module assessments and contributing to the end-of-year assessments in the early years of the programme.

Tony is a biochemist with an outstanding record in teaching and a strong record in educational research. He has been involved with ELM since 2011 and has also served as Associate Dean, Medical Admissions, for the Division of Health Sciences.
